When we talk about moving with a family, most people envision choosing a good school for the kids, but rarely do we chat about the amazing pets that might be coming along for the ride. Just like with people, moving can be stressful for the members of the fam that have four paws.
Whether you are moving across town, the state, or perhaps an ocean, here are some things you should keep in mind when relocating with your pets.
Before You Move
Know the rules of your Homeowners Association. If you are lost on all things HOA, no worries, I know it can be a lot. In this case, know that your Homeowners Association can absolutely restrict what kind of pets you have (likely no mini horses in your future). If you are beginning your home search, check on the details of the CC&R to be sure the neighborhood is pet friendly.
Find out what pet-friendly amenities are in your new neighborhood. Much like looking for a good school for your kids, ensuring that there are places for your pet in your new neighborhood is a must. Take into consideration the distance of the move and the type of transportation you will be using. Sure, your dog might love to go for a ride in the car, but relocating with pets is a whole new ball game. Depending on how far you are travelling and the time of year, you may opt to take your pet with you, fly your pet (pets aren’t always allowed in the cabin) with you, or hire a pet transportation company. The size and type of your pet may determine what options are open to you or what you will need for the move.
When You Arrive
Consider the climate of your new home. If you have made a major relocation to a different climate, such as to sunny Las Vegas, be aware of how this will affect your pet. Paws may not be used to hot or cold pavement, changes in weather, or how the climate affects your home. Even a time zone change can throw your pet for a loop. Consider changes in your routine to avoid the hottest or coldest times of day while your pet adjusts.
Ensure you allow your pet time to adjust to their new surroundings. Just like a person, pets need time to adjust to a new house, layout, routine, neighborhood, or time zone. Though our family with paws can often seem like they are chill and totally okay with the shift, it will take a while for them to feel completely at home.
