Relocating with Kids: How to Make a Big Move a Big Adventure

by Bethany Schilder

Relocating can feel like a rollercoaster—and not the kind with a long line and cotton candy at the end. But when you’ve got kids in tow, the stakes (and the emotions) are even higher. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, this guide is your go-to for turning moving mayhem into a family-friendly mission.

Let’s break it down into three phases: Pre-Move Prep, The Move Itself, and Post-Move Magic. Let’s gooo!

Pre-Move Prep: Get Everyone On Board

Before the packing tape comes out, take time to prep emotionally and logistically. A smooth transition starts long before the boxes get sealed, especially for little ones who thrive on routine and reassurance.

Talk About It Early

Kids of all ages appreciate feeling included. Have a family meeting to talk about the move. Explain the “why,” share some exciting details, and encourage questions. The more involved they feel, the less scary the unknown becomes.

Let Them Help

Let little ones help pack a few boxes or decorate them with stickers. For older kids, assign them a “moving project” like researching fun spots near the new home. Giving them ownership of a small part of the process helps them feel empowered and included.

Explore the New Place (Even Virtually!)

Take a virtual tour of your new neighborhood or check out local parks, schools, and libraries online. Make a list of “first adventures” you’ll take together once you arrive! This helps turn nerves into excitement and gives them something to look forward to.

Say Sweet Goodbyes

Plan a farewell party or let the kids make cards for neighbors, friends, or teachers. Teens might enjoy creating a photo book or video diary of their favorite memories. Honoring what you’re leaving behind is just as important as celebrating what’s ahead.

The Move: Keep Calm & Pack Snacks

Moving day is go-time, and it can be a wild one. With the right strategy (and enough snacks), you can keep the chaos to a minimum and the smiles rolling.

Create a “Moving Day” Backpack

Pack a special bag for each kid with snacks, favorite toys, a change of clothes, and comfort items. Bonus points for including a surprise treat like a new book or game. Having their essentials handy keeps kids calm and makes transitions smoother.

Keep Them Entertained

For longer moves, load up tablets with movies, games, or audiobooks. Old-school coloring books and travel games are also great for reducing screen time. Entertainment = distraction = less stress for everyone in the car or plane.

Be Flexible

Things will go off schedule—it’s part of the adventure! Build in extra breaks, plan for mood swings, and keep your sense of humor handy. Expecting hiccups makes them easier to handle when they (inevitably) show up.

Post-Move Magic: Help Them Settle In

Once the boxes are in and the keys are yours, it’s time to create new routines—and new joy! This phase is where the real magic begins as you turn that new house into a home.

Prioritize Their Space

Set up their rooms first. A familiar bedspread or stuffed animal can go a long way in helping kids feel at home in a new space. If they’re old enough, let them help arrange their furniture to feel a sense of control.

Create New Routines

Start new traditions, like Friday pizza nights or Saturday morning walks to a local park. Familiar routines bring comfort, but new rituals create excitement. A mix of both can ease the transition and create positive new associations.

Get Them Involved

Find local activities, sports teams, or classes to help them make friends. Visit their new school together before the first day if you can. The faster they connect with peers and feel part of a community, the more confident they’ll feel.

Give It Time

Some kids adjust quickly, others need a bit more grace. Be patient with the emotional ups and downs—yours and theirs! Checking in regularly and validating their feelings helps them process and settle in with support.

Let’s Make This Move Magical!

Relocating with kids doesn’t have to be a stress fest. With a little planning, a lot of snacks, and a whole bunch of love, you can make your move an unforgettable family adventure. This is a chance to build resilience, make memories, and discover new favorite spots together.

Ready to relocate (with or without glitter glue and Goldfish crackers)? I’d love to be your guide every step of the way. Let’s get this party started!

Anytime between “now” and “right now” is a good time to take action on shaping your best life, and that includes where you live. Let’s get the ball rolling on your next steps.
