Nothing beats the heat like a nice dip in the pool on a sweltering day, especially when you live in a desert! I’ve talked about things you can do around Las Vegas with kids to keep cool and the necessities you need to live here (hello sunscreen!). Let’s dive into (see what I did there?) some essentials for maintaining the ultimate cool by the pool.
Tunes
Ensuring a chill day by (and in) the pool requires you to set the proper mood. Playlists that combine relaxing and upbeat tunes that are kid friendly are best — especially if you have nearby neighbors. There are a bunch on Spotify, just search for pool, choose playlists, get your speakers and go!
Floaties
In case you’ve missed it, a pool full of floaties is all the rage. Just be sure you keep them in the pool, so you don’t have to be rescued. In the search for the ultimate floatie, Target has ensured that we will never be able to spend less than $50 there (if you have accomplished this, please let me know your secret) with its Sun Squad collection. It features everything from Unicorns to Mermaid Tails and Sloths — I am so on board with that last one. Pool time IS sloth time.
A Beverage
The first rule of the keeping cool pool club is to stay hydrated — a necessity for the dry Las Vegas heat. In addition to your water having an adult beverage is also an option (why else are there pool floaties with cup holders?). Grab a patio-safe tumbler and mix up a simple sparkling sangria-style wine spritzer.
In your tumbler (yes, they have fun ones in the Sun Squad collection):
- Add ice
- 1 oz Gin
- 3 oz California Roots Sweet Peach Wine
- 3 oz LaCroix Key Lime Sparkling Water (or for a sweeter drink, Trader Joe’s Sparkling Limeade)
- Add a slice of orange to the cup after a giving it a good squeeze
- Umbrella straw optional (but highly recommended)
With your tunes, floatie, and beverage you just need a summer read for the ultimate chill!
A Good Book
Having a good summer read is a must for keeping cool by the pool. There are many summer reading lists out there and finding your best beach (or pool in this case) read depends on what you like in a book. Some light romance, a little sci-fi, or maybe a good biography. No matter what your poison, I recommend Bookshop.org for your next purchase, as it will support your local bookstores. A good read and supporting local, you can’t go wrong there! It just so happens that they also have a summer reading list.
And don’t forget to cover up!
Last, but not least, remember to cover up! A great floppy hat, a swimsuit cover up, and/or a fabulous patio umbrella will ensure you get all the chill you need without the burn.
