Summer is sunshine, pool days, and… moving trucks? For many families, summer is also the prime time to make a big move—especially if they want to be settled before the first school bell rings.
But moving before the school year isn’t just about packing boxes and forwarding mail. There’s so much more to consider when kids are involved—like school zones, registration deadlines, and helping your little ones adjust to a brand-new environment.
No worries, though—I’ve got your back (and your backpacks)! Let’s walk through the big things you should know when moving before the school year.
Research School Zones Early
Before you fall in love with a home, make sure it falls within the school zone you want. Not all homes in a neighborhood feed into the same schools—and district boundaries can get a little funky.
Clark County School District (CCSD), which covers Las Vegas, has an online School Locator Tool that makes this super easy. Just pop in the address and it’ll show you the zoned elementary, middle, and high schools.
Tip: Even if you plan to go the private or charter route, knowing your zoned public school helps with enrollment timelines and planning.
Know the Registration Timeline
Every district has its own rules, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll need proof of residency to register your child. That often includes a utility bill or lease agreement, so it’s important to get moved in (or at least have a signed contract) before you start the enrollment process.
In Las Vegas, CCSD typically opens online registration in the spring for the upcoming school year. And yes—you can enroll mid-year, but it’s smoother if you’re in the system early.
Pick a Kid-Friendly Community
When relocating with kiddos, you’re not just buying a home—you’re joining a community. Look for neighborhoods with parks, other families, and nearby schools. Some popular family-friendly areas around Las Vegas include:
- Summerlin – Top-rated schools, tons of parks, and community events galore
- Green Valley – Established, quiet, and close to great schools
- Skye Canyon – Newer developments with lots of young families and amenities
Ask your agent (hi, that’s me!) about school rankings, walkability, and family-friendly features in the areas you’re eyeing. I’ve even created a downloadable Las Vegas Neighborhood Guide to help you out!
Expect Big Emotions (and Celebrate the Wins!)
Moving is a huge transition—especially for kids. New school, new friends, new everything. It’s totally normal for them to feel nervous, excited, or even a little overwhelmed. (Parents too, tbh.)
What helps:
- Visit the new school before the first day if you can
- Keep routines as consistent as possible during the move
- Get involved in school events or meet-the-teacher days
And don’t forget to celebrate the little wins—like making a new friend or figuring out their locker combo!
